Amy and I absolutely loved the famously splendid isolation of Big Bend. It’s a special place that inspires curiousity about the incredible geologic forces of our planet. The Chisos Mountains are near the heart of Big Bend. The Chisos are a mountain range island encircled by the larger desert environment of Big Bend National Park.
The must-do hike in The Chisos is The Window Trail. The Window Trail traverses through the Chisos Basin and ends at a pour-off point; The Window. Water runoff has carved a polished, v-shaped window into the ancient volcanic rock to frame a window into the mountain of the surrounding desert. It’s about a 5.5 mile out-and-back hike. A unique aspect of this hike is how your zoomed out perspective slowly zooms in, then back out again much like a camera lens. There’s no way to fully appreciate The Window without exploring both perspectives.
The Takeaway
There’s more than one perspective on most things. Exploring different perspectives can make us wiser and more authentic people.
The Reflection
An intense focus on a single perspective erodes the influence of those who seek to lead or serve at any level. Seeking to understand where someone with a different view is coming from almost always leads to common ground. Different perspectives can also lead to better decisions and personal growth. It’s not easy to explore different views, but the rewards are worth the effort.
Field Question
