The fifth pillar

Preserve what makes adventure possible.

Inspiration should lead to stewardship—for public lands, local ecosystems, cultural memory, and access for the next generation.

A responsibility

Adventure becomes stewardship.

The more closely we know a place, the harder it becomes to treat it like scenery. We have a legacy to protect: America’s great natural places and the stories connected to them, courageously preserved by those who came before us. Public lands, national parks, national monuments, state parks, and other natural areas have been entrusted to our care. We have a duty to preserve them and an opportunity to draw strength from them through the many outdoor pursuits that shape our stories and fuel our souls.
