Delicate Arch

There is no more iconic National Park than Arches, and there is no natural formation more emblematic of the National Park System than Delicate Arch. There are more than 2000 arches in the park, and Delicate Arch is the largest free standing arch among them.

There is no more iconic National Park than Arches, and there is no natural formation more emblematic of the National Park System than Delicate Arch. There are more than 2000 arches in the park, and Delicate Arch is the largest free standing arch among them. The arch opening is much larger than we expected. The primary sculptor of the arch was actually the slow cycle of water, freezing, and gravity interacting with the ancient Entrada Sandstone. The hike up to the arch is a nice 3 mile out-and-back with about a 500’ elevation gain.

It’s mind blowing to consider how a seemingly random convergence of natural forces over time could create something so unique and inspiring. The recipe for the formation of Delicate Arch and the landscape of Arches National Park is crazy unique. It’s an incredibly rare and improbable convergence of geological circumstance, structural efficiency and fortunate timing. In spite of that, Delicate Arch certainly seems like it was meant for this exact place and time.

The Takeaway

The convergence of people, place, and time are unique and random. Interestingly, we sometimes discover that random convergences actually seem to have purpose and design.

The Reflection

During different seasons of life, I have made some strong connections and great friends simply because we crossed paths. I have seen this same dynamic play out for Amy and my kids. As we move through the opportunities, challenges and seasons of life we make conenctions along the way. Interestingly, these connections are sometimes made at opportune moments when we need encouragement or renewed perspective.

Field Question
