Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is about 20 miles outside of Las Vegas. It was the first Conservation Area in Nevada. Red Rock is part of the Mojave Desert landscape, but it’s unique in several ways. Red Rock has rich plant and wildlife diversity. Red Rock has springs, narrow canyons, sandstone cliffs, and rugged peaks. It’s an amazing place. This visitor center is well designed and very informative.
Emily and Harmon were able to join me and Amy for the trip. It also happened to be my birthday when we visited. That was the just leverage Harmon and I needed to convince Emily and Amy how refreshing the Mojave Desert can be in June. Of our three kids, Emily is the least likely to be excited about a desert hike with Dad. I was impressed at how capable she was, but maybe she was driving pace to just get it done. It didn’t matter. I was just thrilled that she embraced doing something with me simply because I enjoy it.
The Takeaway
The intentional and selfless investment of time and energy into someone’s life has a lasting impact.
The Reflection
Like all of you who have children, and now grandchildren in our case, we are crazy proud of them. Moments and memories like this one remind me how fortunate we are to have kids like ours. I remember Emily smiling and hiking through the Mojave Desert like she loved it. Granted, she did have some pep in her step.
