Chalk Creek Canyon

Across the country, we have access to some incredible National Forests. None are more impressive than the San Isabel National Forest in Colorado.

Across the country, we have access to some incredible National Forests. None are more impressive than the San Isabel National Forest in Colorado. Theodore Roosevelt set aside the original San Isabel Forest Reserve in 1902. San Isabel now encompasses more than 1.1M acres across 11 counties. There are nineteen 14er’s within the boundaries of San Isabel. It’s a beautiful stretch of the Southern Rockies.

Chalk Creek Canyon

Chalk Creek Canyon is within San Isabel. It preserves some of the mining and railroad history of the area. Narrow Gauge Trail #1432 climbs across the slope of Mount Antero through Chalk Creek Canyon. Mount Princeton is visible across the valley. We first stumbled upon this remarkably scenic trail during the Covid pandemic in 2020 on a trip with Harmon, his lifelong friend Jake, Anna, and Sam.

The covid pandemic was a strange and difficult time, especially for young people. Our trip to Colorado in June of 2020 created a remarkably positive contrast against the backdrop of the pandemic. In addition to some great hiking, we rafted and fly fished on the Arkansas River. Our immersion in the Colorado Rockies could not have been more timely.

The Takeaway

The contrast between the pace and pressures of daily life with the peace and wonder of outdoor places has never been sharper than it is today.

The Reflection

It happens every time we explore the Rocky Mountains, or other scenic natural places. We relax, the world slows down, and we become more aware of our surroundings. The recurring feeling that many of us feel to take a mental break has never been more real. A challenging climb, a fishing trip, or just an easy hike can recenter us and bring renewed energy. It’s almost as if we are hard wired for it.
